Awareness programmes on eye donation

With the eye donation fortnight being observed from August 25 to September 8, awareness programmes on eye donation are being held in the city.

The role of relatives in eye donation was the focus of an awareness programme organised on Friday at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) by its Department of Ophthalmology.

B. Zaibunissa, Professor of Ophthalmology, CMCH, said that the major requirement for eye donation was the death certificate of the donor and the presence of a next of kin, who has to consent.

Even if the deceased had pledged his/her eyes, the cornea could be removed only if the person’s relative consented.

Similarly, the relative could also consent to donate the cornea even if the deceased had not signed up for eye donation.

The relatives of a donor were felicitated during the programme.

The objective of the event was to encourage more people to volunteer for eye donation at CMCH, so that it would benefit people from the economically weaker sections of society.

Those willing to donate to the CMCH could contact the hospital at (0422) 2301 393/2301 394/2301 395/2301 396.

These telephones lines are attended round-the-clock. Once information was provided in these numbers, the CMCH would send an ambulance to remove the cornea, which had to be done within six hours of death.
