More than 5,000 people are expected to turn up for a marathon planned for October 6 in the city to create awareness on cancer. The Coimbatore Marathon 2013 is being organised by the Coimbatore Cancer Foundation (CCF), Coimbatore Runners and Tango.

The event would include a 21.2 km run, five km run/walk, 10 km run/walk, 1 km cancer survivors’ walk, and a 1 km CEOs’ walk. The total prize money of more than Rs. 2 lakh was on the offer in separate categories for men and women for the 21.2 km run and 10 km run, thought the event was for a charitable cause. Participants would be given their bibs (chest numbers) at the expo. They could also dedicate their run to someone in particular with personalised messages on T- shirts. He added that this was planned to be an annual event and he urged Coimbatoreans to patronise the marathon as it brought about a sense of unity. The registration fee for the 5 km run was Rs. 250 and Rs. 500 for the 10 km and the 21.2 km. Finisher medals and certificates (to be downloaded online) would be awarded to participants.
